Softball: UL centerfielder Brianna Cherry has chance to go pro

Tim Buckley, The Advertiser, April 3, 2013

UL centerfielder Brianna Cherry has a chance to go pro.

Cherry’s name was called Monday night at the National Pro Fastpitch softball college draft, held in Nashville, Tenn.

The Ragin’ Cajun senior went in the third round of the five-round, 20-player draft to the Akron (Ohio) Racers, who also made LSU pitcher Rachele Fico the draft’s No. 1 overall pick.

The NPF – comprised of four teams in Akron, the New York/New Jersey Comets, the Chicago Bandits and the USSSA Pride – opens its season June 5.

Cherry, from Petal, Miss., is hitting .374 with seven doubles, seven home runs and 30 RBIs this season for the 22-11 Cajuns.
