Softball: Trio Named to the All-Louisiana Softball Team

Alissa Dalton named Newcomer of the Year; Summer Ellyson and Kara Gremillion also honored

LAFAYETTE Alissa Dalton, Summer Ellyson and Kara Gremillion represented Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns Softball on the 2018 All-Louisiana Collegiate Softball Team which was unveiled by the Louisiana Sports Writers Association (LSWA) on Saturday.

Dalton was named the state’s Newcomer of the Year and was joined on the first team by Ellyson. Gremillion, an honorable mention selection, received All-Louisiana recognition for the third straight season.

A Louisiana Sports Writers Association panel of media and sports publicists selected the All-Louisiana team, based on statistics and performances through the teams’ conference tournaments. This is the 33rd year of All-Louisiana softball selections.

The 10th state Newcomer of the Year in the program’s history, Dalton was one the toughest in the nation to strikeout with just seven in 217 plate appearances and provided a strong glove at shortstop with only eight errors in 189 chances. Her 70 hits rank Top 60 nationally and she was the Ragin’ Cajuns top run producer.

Like Dalton, who also was an All-Sun Belt and All-NFCA Central Region honoree, Ellyson collected her third postseason accolade. A 20-game winner in her first season as a full-time starter, Ellyson (23-10, 1.53 ERA) ranked Top 30 in fewest hits allowed and wins and Top 40 in ERA and total strikeouts in the NCAA rankings on June 1.

Gremillion was once again a lockdown force at third base with a career-high 139 assists – second straight season with 100-plus assists. She finished second on the team with 15 multiple-hit games, leading her to a third consecutive campaign with at least 40 hits and second straight season with 50-plus hits.

The Ragin’ Cajuns (41-16, 21-6 Sun Belt) recently completed their first season under head coach Gerry Glasco‘s guidance, earning the program’s 20th consecutive NCAA Tournament bid and advancing to the championship game of the NCAA Baton Rouge Regional.

Louisiana reached 40 wins for the 20th straight season and was ranked in both major national Top 25 polls the entire season.
