Softball: Summer Ellyson Collects Sun Belt Pitcher of the Week Award

LAFAYETTE – Summer Ellyson collected her fourth Community Coffee Sun Belt Softball Pitcher of the Week award of the 2019 season on Tuesday, recognition for her role in No. 10 Louisiana’s undefeated week against McNeese and UT Arlington.
 
Ellyson posted three victories, had a combined and complete game shutout and recorded a save as the Ragin’ Cajuns (33-4, 15-0 Sun Belt) extended their win streak to 10 games. Her efforts increased her nation-leading victories total to 23.
 
She surrendered only one run and struck out 28 batters over 22 innings of work in the circle. The junior righthander pitched scoreless softball in three of her four appearances, with the lone run allowed coming off a wild pitch.
 
Ellyson (23-4, 1.18 ERA) played a part in all three wins of the UTA series, posting wins in Games 1 and 2 and recording a three-inning save in the series finale.
 
"I come into every game with the same mindset," Ellyson said. "You want to score first — that’s really important — but my job is to just to come in and hold the opposing team to no runs."  
 
Ellyson started the week with a 52-pitch effort in five shutout innings at McNeese in which she struck out nine Cowgirls, picked up her sixth double-digit strikeout effort in the past 12 starts by fanning 11 UTA batters on Friday and in Saturday’s complete game seven-inning shutout of the Mavericks, threw only 74 pitches and never faced more than one extra batter in a single inning.
 
It’s the seventh career SBC Pitcher of the Week award for Ellyson. Her four selections this season are the most in a single season by a Ragin’ Cajuns pitcher since Jordan Wallace received as many during the 2013 season.
 
Louisiana, which has received at least one SBC Player and Pitcher of the Week award since the inception of the league in 2000, now owns 85 pitcher of the week awards.
