The 17th ranked Ragin’ Cajuns pounded five home runs in two games as they swept Nicholls State at Lamson Park on Tuesday night, both in six-innings to move their current winning streak to ten games.

The Cajuns took game one, 8-0, to pick up the 600th win in Lamson Park’s history, compared to just 93 losses.  With the two wins the Cajuns move to 22-1 at their home park in 2011.

In game two, the Cajuns blasted four of their home runs as they scored over 10 runs for the 12th time in the 2011 in an 11-2 win.

Gabriele Bridges hit three home runs on the day to push her season total to 20, tying her for first place in the nation.

GAME ONE – Louisiana 8, Nicholls State 0 (6 innings)

The Cajuns used an 8-0, six-inning win over the Colonels to post the 600th win in Lamson Park’s history.

Ashley Brignac started for the Cajuns and got out of a bases loaded jam in the first inning before giving way to Christina Hamilton (8-1) who went the remaining five innings to lead the Cajuns to their fourth shutout in five games.

Christi Orgeron and Katie Smith each had two hits for the Cajuns who posted nine as a team.  Orgeron and Gabriele Bridges each had two RBI.

For the seventh consecutive game, the Cajuns scored in the first inning as they plated two runs on two hits to take the early lead.  Nerissa Myers led off with a walk and was replaced on first by Orgeron after a fielder’s choice.  Orgeron advanced to second after a groundout, and then the Cajuns used some two-out hitting to plate their runs.

Paige Cormier continued to swing a hot bat as she singled through the left side to plate Orgeron.  Cormier moved to second on the throw home and scored on a Sarah Draheim RBI single up the middle to make the score 2-0.

UL would tack on two more in the second inning to extend the lead to 4-0.  Smith got things started with a one-out single and was followed by Myers second walk of the game.

Orgeron then delivered her 14th double and 72nd RBI of the season as Smith scored and Myers moved to third.  Myers would then score on an RBI groundout by Gabriele Bridges.

UL added a single run in the fourth inning thanks to Bridges one-out home run.  The solo shot was the 61st dinger of Bridges’ career and the 18th of the season, a new career high for the senior who has seen her home run total rise in each season.

UL put things away with three runs in the sixth inning to bring the final score to 8-0.  Smith led off with a single and moved to second on a throwing error.  A Myers single then plated Smith and Orgeron’s second double of the game plated Myers.

With Orgeron standing on second, Taryn Broussard entered the game as a pinch hitter, seeing action for the first time since an injury on Feb. 25.   She proceeded to single to centerfield, plating Orgeron to close out the game.

Ashton Bennett (5-13) went the distance for the Colonels and was shouldered with the loss.

GAME TWO – Louisiana 11, Nicholls State 2 (6 innings)

The Cajuns continued to put up big numbers as the nation’s second highest scoring team hit four home runs in an 11-2 win over the Colonels.

Bridges hit two of long balls as she went 2-for-4 with six RBI.  Myers also posted two hits while Orgeron and Draheim had two RBI each.

Brignac (23-3) threw five innings, giving up two runs on four hits with four strikeouts.  Shelbee Rodgers threw one scoreless inning to close out the game.

For the 34th time this season, the Cajuns got on the board first, but for the first time in eight games, they didn’t do it in the first inning as they plated two runs in the third inning to take the lead.

Myers started things with a two-out double and came home on Orgeron’s 19th home run of the season.  The deep shot to right center pushed her NCAA-leading RBI total to 75.

Nicholls State got their first run of the day in fourth inning when a leadoff walk came around and scored on an RBI single.  The run snapped a streak of 25.1 scoreless innings for Brignac.

The Cajuns tacked on two more in the bottom of the inning thanks to another long ball.  This time Cormier started things off by reaching on an error and scored when Draheim hit her fifth home run of the season, giving the Cajuns a 4-1 lead.

The Colonels would pull within two with a solo home run in the fifth inning, but the Cajuns would respond with three runs to pull away in the bottom of the frame.  Myers and Orgeron reached with one out on a hit batter and a walk, and both came home on Bridges second home run of the day to make the score 7-2.

The Cajuns closed things out with a four spot in the sixth inning.  Myers delivered an RBI single to score Murphy who was hit by pitch.  After Orgeron walked, Bridges hit her second three-run homer of the game to finish things off at 11-2.

Katie Moulder (2-7) was tagged with the lost after throwing 4.1 innings, giving up seven runs, six earned.

The Cajuns are now set to travel to Florida Atlantic on Saturday and Sunday for a pivotal three-game Sun Belt set.
