It truly was the seniors’ day at Lamson Park on Sunday afternoon.

In the final regular season game of the 2012 season, the No. 5-ranked UL Ragin’ Cajuns overcame an early 3-0 deficit in style with an 11-4 victory over UL Monroe.

With the bottom line safely secured with the blowout win, the seven outgoing seniors on the Cajuns’ squad were able to relish their many contributions to the program for the day and for their careers.

"Collectively as a group, they set the standard very, very, very high on the field, in the classroom and in the community," UL co-head coach Michael Lotief said. "Each one of them did it in their own special way.

"More importantly, they’re all outstanding graduates and they’ve had a great impact on the community. I just can’t say enough about the impact all seven of those kids have had on the program."

The seven seniors — Ashley Brignac, Christi Orgeron, Paige Cormier, Katie Smith, Erikka Murphy, Megan Granger and Callie Philen — all contributed to Sunday’s victory that upped UL’s record to 46-3 overall and 21-3 in Sun Belt play.

In the circle, Brignac bounced back from the two-out, three-run homer allowed in the first to improve her record to 20-2 after allowing four runs on five hits with four walks and seven strikeouts.

In striking out two in the seventh inning, Brignac became the No. 2 strikeout pitcher in UL history, passing Kyla Hall, with 821 going into the conference tournament Wednesday in Boca Raton, Fla.

"That goes to the entire team," Brignac said. "That’s the team that accomplished that. It’s been great to see all of the things that this team has achieved throughout the season."

Making it even more special for Brignac was striking out the game’s last batter with another senior Philen catching behind the plate. That special moment, coupled with the Ragin’ Cajun cheer at home plate with the fans after the game, got to Brignac emotionally.

"That was unbelievable," Brignac said with tears in her eyes. "It’s a special place. The fans are unbelievable, the stadium is unbelievable. I never would have chosen a place over this. Today we can celebrate our years here and tomorrow it’s back to work, so we can finish this season off where we want to — in Oklahoma City."

Smith was for 2-for-3 with a walk and a run scored to finish her regular season out at .419.

Orgeron was at it again by going 2-for-4 with her 20th home run of the season and three RBIs to give her 89 on the season.

"I just took the same approach I take for every game," Orgeron said. "I didn’t want to put any more pressure on each at-bat than there really was, despite whatever other things people were adding to it.

"We just wanted to come out fighting today. We kind of felt like we could have brought a little more energy to the park yesterday and we didn’t want that to happen again."

Granger hit in the clean-up spot today and made nine put-outs at first base.

Cormier was 2-for-4 with an RBI. Her single in the seventh plated UL’s final run and her single in the second helped to set the table for the Cajuns’ crucial four-run second inning that gave UL the lead for good.

Nerissa Myers had the big hit in that frame with a two-run single to finish 2-for-3 with two RBIs.

Murphy was 1-for-4 with her 13th RBI of the season.

Other juniors joining Myers in celebrating the seniors were Brianna Cherry and Sarah Draheim, who hit back-to-back doubles in the third for a run. Cherry later added a sacrifice fly in the fourth-run seventh.

"It was a good way to end the regular season," Lotief said. "I think falling behind early only got them more locked in."
