Ragin’ Cajuns Softball Sweeps Weekly Sun Belt Honors
LAFAYETTE, La. – After helping lead the Ragin’ Cajuns softball team to a three-game sweep of North Texas, shortstop Nerissa Myers and pitcher Jordan Wallace have been named the Sun Belt Player and Pitcher of the Week, respectively.
Myers, a senior shortstop from Petal, Miss, drove in eight runs with three home runs, going 6-for-9 at the plate. In her first plate appearance since February, she hit a solo-home run to lead off the first game of the series. She followed that up with a double and then a grand slam in the fifth inning. She came back in the second game to hit her third home run of the day.
The honor is the third time in her career that she has been named the SBC Player of the Week, and the second time this season a member of the Ragin’ Cajuns has done so. The first was her cousin, Brianna Cherry on February 25. Myers was also named the preseason Player of the Year and was named First Team All-Sun Belt last year.
Wallace, a sophomore from Weatherford, Texas, tossed 14.0 shutout innings, striking out 32 batters and allowing just nine to reach base in two starts and a relief appearance. She went 2-0 in her starts and got a three-inning save in her stint out of the bullpen. She struck out eight of the first nine batters she faced in her second start, and was perfect through three innings.
It was the fifth time in her career that she was named Sun Belt Pitcher of the Week and the second time this season. She was last given the honor on February 18th.
The Cajuns are currently riding a seven game winning streak, and will look to continue their winning ways with a nonconference doubleheader against Southern Miss, at Lamson Park on Wednesday. They return to Sun Belt play over the weekend when they host Middle Tennessee in a three game series.
