Softball: Pair of Cajuns Garner Weekly Honors
LAFAYETTE-Louisiana’s Ragin’ Cajuns softball team swept through the 23rd
Louisiana Classic Softball Tournament and a pair of UL players were honored
by the Sun Belt Conference for their efforts. Donna Bourgeois was tabbed SBC
Pitcher of the Week, while Gabriele Bridges was co-Player of the Week.
Bourgeois was named the Louisiana Classics Most Outstanding Player. The
sophomore made five appearances with a 4-0 record with a save. She boasted a
0.32 ERA in 21.2 innings pitched, allowing just one earned run on the week.
Bourgeois struckout 36 batters compared to just four walks. She scattered 10
hits on the weekend with just one extra base hit, holding opponents to a .130
batting average. Bourgeois combined for a pair of shutouts and had a perfect
game before being relieved against 2008 NCAA Regional participant Louisiana
Tech. She recorded 12 strikeouts against Nicholls State and followed that
with 11 strikeouts against McNeese State.
Bridges was named to the Louisiana Classics All-Tournament team. The slugger
batted .467 on the weekend, finishing the tournament 7-for-15 with four home
runs, including a grand slam and three doubles. Bridges scored seven runs on
the weekend while driving in a team best 11 RBI. She had a slugging
percentage of 1.467 with an on-base percentage of .571 in five games.
Bridges led the team with 22 total bases and was second on the team with five
walks. The sophomore finished the game against Big East opponent Providence,
3-for-4 with two home runs, including a grand slam, a double, three runs
scored a career high six RBI to go along with a career best 10 total bases.
Bridges also had home runs against Lipscomb and McNeese State, with doubles
against 2008 NCAA Regional participant Louisiana Tech and McNeese State. In
addition to her offensive numbers, Bridges posted a perfect fielding
percentage in 37 chances.
The award was the second of the season for Bourgeois and the first of Bridges
UL career.
Bridges shared the award with Caitlyn Bliss of Florida Atlantic and Lindsay
Antone of Western Kentucky.
Bliss continued her hot start to the 2009 season by going .462 (6-of-13) at
the Lipton Invitational at the University of Florida to earn her second
straight Player of the Week nod. Bliss scored the game’s only run in the
Owls’ 1-0 win over Texas Tech, adding three RBIs, a double and a triple at
the tournament.
Antone was named to the Auburn University Tiger Invitational All-Tournament
team after finishing the weekend with a team best .637 batting average in
three games. She racked up seven hits and scored five runs in 11 at bats,
while recording two doubles and five RBIs during the weekend. In the field,
she was perfect recording ten put outs and one assist with zero errors.
