Softball: Orgeron named a finalist for Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award

Daily Advertiser, April 5, 2012

UL senior softball outfielder Christi Orgeron was named one of ten NCAA softball student-athletes as a finalist for the Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award, announced by Premier Sports Management on Wednesday.

To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence – community, classroom, character and competition. The complete list of finalists follows this release.

An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School®, the Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities.

The finalists were chosen by a media committee from the list of 30 candidates announced in February. Nationwide fan voting begins immediately to determine the winner. Fans are encouraged to vote on the Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award website (http://www.seniorclassaward.com) through May 14. Fan votes will be combined with media and Division I softball head coaches’ votes to determine the winner.

Lowe’s, an official Corporate Partner of the NCAA, will announce the Senior CLASS Award® winner during the 2012 NCAA Women’s College World Series, which will be held May 31-June 6 in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.

“We are so proud of Christi, not because of the RBI numbers or her slugging percentage but because of how she does it,” co-head coach Michael Lotief said.

“Her work ethic, working hard day after day, her attitude of trying to improve and get better every day, her competitive spirit and fighting with her entire heart and soul pitch by pitch, her care and concern for her teammates and those around her knowing she has a responsibility to make those around her better and to also influence us and inspire us to chase our potential by never accepting the status quo or giving up on her dreams.”

On the season, Orgeron is batting .423, with 12 homeruns and leads the country with 60 RBI. She recently broke the school and Sun Belt record for RBI and has driven in 254 runs in her career. The New Orleans, La. native needs just five doubles to become the Ragin’ Cajuns all-time leader and leads the team with a .885 slugging percentage.

“This is a kid who basically went from not being recruited, to a redshirt, to the best player in our conference, to the US National Team,” Lotief stated.

“She persevered, she was relentless in her pursuit of her dreams and demanded excellence of herself every step along the way. She did all of this while maintaining excellence in the classroom and being involved in making her community a better place. She is such a deserving kid and we are thankful to Lowe’s for bringing this recognition to such an inspirational journey.”
