Softball: Orgeron Garners Third SBC POW AwardCory Weigel, UL Sports Information, March 26, 2012 LAFAYETTE, La. – Louisiana’s Christi Orgeron was named the Sun Belt Conference Softball Player of the Week after smashing the conference and UL career RBI record last week, as announced by the conference office on Monday.
The honor is the third of the season for Orgeron and the seventh for the Ragin’ Cajuns squad that is off to an incredible 30-1 start.
Orgeron was 6-for-14 (.429) on the week, hitting two home runs, driving in 10 and scoring seven runs. The senior passed Danyele Gomez to become the Cajuns and the SBC all-time RBI leader as she blasted her third grand slam of the year in the nightcap against Georgia Tech on Thursday.
The New Orleans, La. native added five RBI over the weekend, including her team-leading 12th home run, giving her 254 career runs driven in. Orgeron currently leads the NCAA in RBI with 60, after topping the nation with 101 last season. She also became the Sun Belt’s all-time doubles leader earlier in the year and currently has 61 career doubles to date.
“For Christi to pass Danyele Gomez is a great honor,” co-head coach Michael Lotief stated. “Gomez was a very special kid and had such a special career and has gone on to do some great things. For that honor to be surpassed by Christi is special. She has earned it and gone through all the hard work to be the tremendous player she is today.”
UL will take the week off before returning to action for their final non-conference game of the year on Wednesday, April 4, at McNeese State. The Cajuns will host a three game series against South Alabama, April 6-7, at Lamson Park.
