Softball: No. 10 @RaginCajunsSB Tops No. 21 Baylor, Completes Friday Sweep & Kent State Win

WACO, Texas – 10th-ranked Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns Softball picked up a Top 25 victory at the Baylor Invitational on Friday, defeating 21st-ranked Baylor 5-2 at Getterman Stadium.

Casidy Chaumont provided a three-hit effort with each hit triggering a run-scoring frame for the Ragin’ Cajuns (13-0). Summer Ellyson was strong in the pitching circle striking out 10 and limiting the Bears (8-5) to four hits.

The Ragin’ Cajuns, who posted a 21-1 (5 inn.) win over Kent State earlier in the day, completed a sweep of opening day action in the Baylor Invitational.

Louisiana clinched the No. 1 seed for bracket play in the tournament, which begins Saturday at 3 p.m., and kept its undefeated start to the 2019 season intact.

LEADING THE RAGIN’ CAJUNS
Chaumont finished 3-for-4 at the plate, posted the game’s initial RBI and scored a game-high two runs.

Keeli Milligan posted the other multiple-hit outing finishing 2-for-4 and picked up two more stolen bases to increase her season total to 21-for-21.

Alissa Dalton clinched the outcome in the sixth inning when she drove a two-out, two-run single up the middle to extend the lead to 5-2. Dalton increased her RBI total for the day to five with the clutch hit.

Ellyson posted her fifth complete game of seven innings with less than 100 pitches needed for the result (threw 98). She faced only four over the minimum and combined with the defense to turn two double plays.

KEY MOMENTS OF THE GAME

  • Chaumont gave Louisiana the lead for good in the second inning when she drove the first pitch she saw down the right field line to score Raina O’Neal (leadoff single).
  • Ellyson induced a 4-6-3 double play in the bottom half of the second inning to erase a leadoff single from Goose McGlaun and prevent an answer from the hosts.
  • Chaumont led off the fourth inning with her second double of the game and later scored on Sarah Hudek’s sacrifice fly.
  • Milligan used her speed to force an errant throw in the fourth inning which allowed her to score increasing Louisiana’s lead to 3-0.
  • Ellyson notched a strikeout to close the bottom half of the fourth inning to halt Baylor’s rally after a two-run single trimmed the Ragin’ Cajuns lead to 3-2.
  • Dalton’s two-run single foiled Baylor’s attempt to work out of a bases-loaded, no-outs jam in the sixth inning.
  • Aside from a hit by pitch in the seventh inning, Ellyson retired each Baylor hitter over the final two innings to secure the triumph.
