Softball: Hamilton and Elkins Named NFCA All-Americans

OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. – On the eve of the sixth Women’s College World Series in Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns softball history, pitcher Christina Hamilton and catcher Lexie Elkins were named NFCA All-Americans, as announced by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association in a press conference at the ASA Hall of Fame Stadium on Wednesday.

Hamilton earned second-team All-American honors and Elkins earned third-team honors, becoming one of just two pitcher and catcher batteries in the nation to earn All-American honors, with Dallas Escobedo and Amber Freeman of Arizona State being the other two.

“To me when they are afforded the highest individual honor in our sport, I think a couple things,” Lotief said.  “I go back to team, obviously your team had great success and you have good teammates to stand behind you and help by fighting with you and pushing you.  It’s also a credit to their hard work and dedication as individuals.”

Hamilton, the Sun Belt Pitcher of the Year, has had one of the best seasons for a pitcher in school history, going 29-2 with a 1.53 ERA, including a 5-0 record with a 1.41 ERA in postseason play to help lead the Cajuns to the WCWS.

Of Hamilton’s 29 wins, three have come against WCWS participants, defeating Oklahoma in both games of a doubleheader and Baylor, and she has won 26 of her last 27 decisions with her only two losses coming against South Florida (Feb. 22) and South Alabama (May 9) in the Sun Belt Conference Championships.

Elkins has hit the fourth-most home runs in a season in school history, batting .388 with 22 home runs and 72 RBI, including a pair of two-homer games in the national tournament, first in the Regional Championship game against Texas and second in the Super Regional clinching game against Arizona at Lamson Park.

Elkins earned Sun Belt Player of the Year honors in her first season with the Ragin’ Cajuns, leading the conference in home runs and RBI and is top five in home runs, home runs per game and RBI per game in the nation.

The Ragin’ Cajuns will begin their Women’s College World Series play tomorrow at 6 p.m., when they take on the Kentucky Wildcats at the ASA Hall of Fame Stadium.
