Softball: Fernandez Named Sun Belt Player of the WeekSoftball – Fernandez Named Sun Belt Player of the Week

LAFAYETTE, La. After batting .786 (11-for-14) with five runs scored over the past week, senior infielder Natalie Fernandez was named the Sun Belt Player of the Week, as announced by the Sun Belt Conference office on Monday.
Fernandez becomes the third Cajun to win the award this season, picking up the first of her career.
We ve seen this in the past [seniors stepping up], head coach Michael Lotief said. She s gotten a sense of urgency that this is her last season and she is stepping up. She is also realizing that this is her time to lead and her time to take charge. She is playing phenomenal softball right now.
Fernandez went 6-for-6 at the plate on Wednesday during the Cajuns doubleheader sweep of Sam Houston State, raising her season batting average above .500 and taking over the conference lead.
She raised her batting average once again over the weekend, going 5-for-7 at the plate against Georgia State, including another 3-for-3 game, and raising her hitting streak to 14 games. She finished the weekend with a conference-high .517, which leads the conference and ranks
The Cajuns will continue their current road trip on Wednesday, March 26, when they travel to Houston to take on the Houston Cougars for a midweek doubleheader, with first pitch scheduled for 4 p.m.
