Softball: Eight Softball Members Named NFCA Scholar AthletesLAFAYETTE, La. — Eight members of the Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns softball team were recognized as National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) Scholar Athletes for their accomplishments in the classroom during the 2011-12 academic year.
The NFCA program recognizes all student-athletes, who are able to maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher. “This university challenges our student-athletes to pursue excellence on the field and in the classroom,” head coach Michael Lotief said. “We are extremely proud of the academic success of our players. The quality of their education is the biggest win we will ever achieve.” Ashley Brignac completed the academic year with a 4.0 GPA and was named the 2012 Capital One Academic All-American of the Year for the second consecutive season. The Cajuns as a team posted a team GPA of 3.0. All-Americans Christi Orgeron and Katie Smith were also named scholar athletes along with Marie Hoag, Megan Waterman, Callie Philen, Jordan Wallace and Paige Cormier. “These honors are a tribute to our awesome university deans, professors, advisors and tutors,” Lotief stated. “Thank you for teaching and pushing these kids to be the best, for believing in them and for caring and sharing your time and talents to help make them better and prepare them for future challenges. “Additionally, special thanks to the softball athletic advisor, Christi Alford, and faculty athletic advisor for softball, Dr. Geoff Stewart.
