The 2007 Sun Belt All-Conference Softball team was announced on Tuesday night at a banquet held on the campus of Middle Tennessee. Four Ragin’ Cajuns were named to the first team with Holly Tankersley named as the first team designated player, Lacey Bertucci at first base, Karli Hubbard in the outfield and Brittany Cuevas was named as a first team pitcher as well as the Freshman of the Year. Mandi Fishback and Joan Joyce, both of FAU, were respectively named as the Player of the Year and Coach of the Year. Other top honors went to Jen Musillo of FAU as the Pitcher of the Year and South Alabama’s Tara Donaldson shared the Newcomer of the Year with FIU’s Monique White. Cuevas, a freshman from Brazoria, Texas, became the all-time leader in wins by a freshman pitcher in Cajuns history as she posted a 31-7 record in the circle during the 2007 season. Cuevas led UL in all pitching categories as she threw 263.0 innings in 42 appearances, starting 40 games and completing 32. Cuevas recorded 273 strike outs, with 10 shutouts and one no-hitter against Troy, the 69th no-hitter in Ragin’ Cajuns history. Opposing hitters hit just .206 against Cuevas and her 31 wins are tied for fourth in a single season. Cuevas joins Jill Robertston (2001), Brooke Mitchell (2002), Danyele Gomez (2003), and Holly Tankersely (2004), as Cajuns named Sun Belt Conference Freshman of the Year. Tankersley, a junior from Kirbyville, Texas, earns her second first-team selection. Tankersley earned first-team honors in 2004, her freshman year. During the 2007 regular season, she led the Cajuns in most offensive categories with a .394 batting average, 57 runs, 71 hits, eight doubles, 18 home runs, 59 RBI, 133 total bases, a .739 SLG%, and a .507 OB%. Tankersley has 48 career home runs, which is currently fourth all-time in UL softball history. Tankersley is also 12-5 in the pitching circle for the Cajuns in 2007. Bertucci, a senior from Folsom, La., earns her third straight first team selection, and fourth All-Conference selection overall, as she was named to the second team in her freshman year. Bertucci is hitting .282 this season with 44 RBI, 14 home runs, 56 base on balls, a .571 SLG%, and a .507 OB%. Bertucci’s 56 walks are the most in a single season and her 58 career home runs are second only to Gomez’s 83 in school history. In 329 chances this season at first base, Bertucci has a .991 fielding percentage.
Sophomore Karli Hubbard from Lafayette, La., earns her first selection to the All-SBC team. Hubbard joins the team as a first team outfielder. She is hitting .320 this season, with 57 hits, a .363 OB%, and a .938 fielding percentage.
