Softball: Comeaux, Stewart Claim Weekly Sun Belt Honors

 Comeaux-Stewart SBC Awards 3.7.17

LAFAYETTE – No. 18-ranked Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns Softball swept the weekly Sun Belt Conference awards for the second time in the past three weeks as sophomore catcher Lexie Comeaux and senior pitcher Alex Stewart were recognized by the league on Tuesday.

Comeaux hit six home runs and posted 15 RBI during the Ragin’ Cajuns Invitational, going 9-for-15 with eight extra base hits, in earing Sun Belt Conference Player of the Week honors. She finished the weekend strong, going 3-for-4 at the plate with three home runs and eight RBI on Sunday.

It’s the fourth straight week a Ragin’ Cajun was named SBC Player of the Week. Comeaux joins Kelli Martinez who was selected as player of the week following opening weekend (Feb. 14) and DJ Sanders who claimed the award the previous two weeks.

Stewart pitched 9-1/3 scoreless innings, allowed only two hits, struck out nine and posted three wins during last weekend’s Ragin’ Cajuns Invitational leading her to Sun Belt Pitcher of the Week honors. Of the 31 batters she faced only four reached base with none advancing past second base.

Stewart claimed her first SBC pitcher of the week award of the season and the third of her career, adding to selections on April 4 and May 9 of the 2016 season. She joins freshman Alyssa Denham, the recipient after the Alabama series, as Louisiana pitchers to claim a weekly SBC award this season.

Comeaux collected an RBI all six games of Louisiana’s 6-0 run through the Ragin’ Cajuns Invitational, notching a trio of four-RBI performances along the way. She closed the weekend with a home run in five straight games, capped off by her first career multi-homer game in the finale vs. Alcorn.

Stewart started both of Louisiana’s games on Saturday and pitched three innings of hitless softball against North Dakota State followed by five scoreless innings with five strikeouts against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. On Sunday, Stewart worked 1-1/3 innings in relief and held Alcorn hitless as the Ragin’ Cajuns rallied from a 4-3 deficit in the third inning. The two combined shutouts on Saturday were her first of the season.

Adding in this week’s awards, five different Ragin’ Cajuns have now been honored this season with a weekly award from the Sun Belt Conference.

Louisiana has now claimed 82 player of the week honors and 76 pitcher of the week honors since the Sun Belt Conference began bestowing the honor in 2000.

The No. 18-ranked Ragin’ Cajuns (17-4), winners of 13 of the last 14 games, close out their season-opening homestand on Thursday at Lamson Park with a single game at 4 p.m. against No. 15 Baylor. The contest is a makeup of a doubleheader that was canceled by weather on Tuesday.

Following the makeup game with Baylor on Thursday, Louisiana travels to Boone, N.C., on Friday for the Sun Belt Conference-opening series at Appalachian State. The series with the Mountaineers is scheduled for a 12 p.m. (CST) doubleheader on Saturday and 11 a.m. (CDT) single game on Sunday.
