Softball: Cajuns Sweep Troy in Final Home Doubleheader of SeasonLAFAYETTE – The Ragin’ Cajuns softball program took to the field for their final home doubleheader of the season and left with a sweep of the Troy Trojans, winning the first game 9-1 in mercy-rule fashion and the second game 6-0. The Cajuns improved to 36-11 overall and 15-4 in Sun Belt Conference play and have won their last 18 games, dating back to March 17 at South Alabama. Sophomore pitcher Jordan Wallace had another banner day in the circle for the Cajuns, picking up a win and a save, starting game one and throwing three innings of relief in game two. She is now 23-6 on the season with two saves a 1.76 ERA and 270 strikeouts. Brianna Cherry picked up four hits in the doubleheader with a 3-for-3 performance in the first game and a season-high four RBI. She tripled in two runs in the second inning, and doubled in two runs in the third. Cherry is now batting a team-high .406 with 43 RBI and 51 runs scored. Troy used back-to-back doubles in the first inning to take an early 1-0 lead in game one, but the Cajuns pitching and defense would keep them off the board for the rest of the doubleheader. The Cajuns responded by plating five runs in the third and four in the fourth to overtake the Trojans and put the mercy-rule into effect. Wallace tossed the first 4.0 innings, allowing one run on one hit and fanning nine batters. Christina Hamilton threw the fifth inning and struck out every batter she faced. It was all Louisiana in the second game, scoring a single run in the second, third and fourth innings and three in the fifth to add insurance for the Cajuns pitching staff. Samantha Walsh and Kelsey Vincent both hit home runs for the Cajuns in game two for their sixth and third home runs of the season, respectively. The homers were their only hits of the game. Victoria Brown got the start for the Cajuns, tossing 4.0 innings allowing two hits and a walk, while striking out four batters. She picked up the win and improved to 8-1 on the season and lowered her ERA to 3.76. Wallace made her second appearance of the day, tossing the final 3.0 innings, allowing two hits and a walk, striking out five batters. Nerissa Myers scored three runs on the season and has now crossed the plate 227 times in her career, and is just three shy of tying the Cajuns All-Time record. The two teams will meet again tomorrow afternoon, with the series finale at 1:00 P.M. for the final regular season game of 2013 at Lamson Park. The five Louisiana seniors will be honored before the game with a Senior Day ceremony. The Cajuns will travel to Monroe next weekend to take on Louisiana-Monroe in the final series of the regular season. They will then travel to Troy for the 2013 Sun Belt Softball Championships. The tournament opens on May 8th with the conference championship game on May 11th. Match-Ups and brackets will be released following the conclusion of the regular season.
