Softball: Cajuns Sweep Sun Belt Awards
For the second time this season, the Ragin’ Cajuns have swept the Sun Belt Conference Softball Player and Pitcher of Week awards. Gabriele Bridges and Ashley Brignac combined to accomplish the feat this week, just as they did in week one. Bridges went 8-for-15 (.533) at the plate for the week with nine RBI and four home runs. She posted the highest slugging percentage, second highest batting average and second highest on base percentage among all players at the prestigious, 18-team Judi Garman Classic. Bridges posted her fifth multi-home run game of the season on Saturday against New Mexico, and an hour later, in the Cajuns’ next game, drew three walks to bring her season total to 30. The Lafitte, La., has now hit 59 career home runs, the third most all-time in UL history. Brignac got the victory in all four of UL’s wins. She picked up just one loss, to No.6/5 Arizona State. The River Ridge, La., native struck out 42 batters in just 28.0 innings. The junior defeated Notre Dame and Long Beach State who were both receiving votes in the NFCA/USA Today and ESPN.com/USA Softball Top 25 polls. The award is the second of the year for Bridges and the third for Brignac. The John Curtis products have swept the Sun Belt awards for the second time this season. They also swept in week one.
