Softball: Cajuns Sweep App State, Extend Sun Belt Lead

LAFAYETTE – The No. 7-ranked Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns softball team piled up multiple runs in each at bat – accumulating at least three in each frame – and completed a three-game Sun Belt Conference sweep of Appalachian State with a 14-0 (5 inn.) win on Sunday at Lamson Park.

Shellie Landry led the charge on offense with a home run and four RBI giving her a home run and at least three RBI in all three games of the series and her team-leading 15th multiple-RBI game. Landry’s final line for the series was 4-for-8 with three home runs and 10 RBI.

Alex Stewart (20-3, 1.68 ERA) carried a perfect game into the fifth inning before App State’s Heather Josey ended the bid with a leadoff single. Stewart struck out nine and picked up her third win of the series, improving to 20-3 overall and 11-0 in Sun Belt Conference action.

With Texas State’s win over South Alabama (26-16, 14-6 Sun Belt), which completed the Bobcats sweep of the Jaguars in San Marcos, the Ragin’ Cajuns (35-6, 16-1 Sun Belt) now hold a five-game lead over USA in the loss column in the Sun Belt standings and sit two wins away from clinching the conference championship.

The Ragin’ Cajuns increased their current win streak at Lamson Park to 17 games and improved to 18-1 at the facility in 2016. The team is two wins shy of reaching 20 on their home turf for the sixth straight season and 25th time in 32 seasons.

No. 7 Louisiana returns to action Saturday-Sunday, April 30-May 1 in Statesboro, Ga., in a three-game series at Georgia Southern (27-21, 11-7 Sun Belt). Games are scheduled to begin at 12 p.m. (CDT) both days with a doubleheader on Saturday and single game on Sunday.

Sara Corbello (2-for-3, 2 RBI), Haley Hayden (2-for-3, 3 runs) and DJ Sanders (2-for-4, 3 RBI) all posted multiple-hit games. As a team, the Ragin’ Cajuns collected eight multiple-hit performances in the series.

For Hayden it marked her third multiple-hit game of the series increasing her team-leading season total to 14. Corbello gathered her 100th career RBI on a two-run single in the third inning. Sanders reached three RBI for the second time in the series (Game 1 on Saturday) and seventh time this season.

Louisiana hit three home runs marking the team’s 25th game (out of 41) with multiple home runs. The Ragin’ Cajuns have launched multiple home runs in each of the last 12 Sun Belt Conference games.

The Ragin’ Cajuns plated three runs in the first inning with one scoring on a throwing error and two additional runs crossing on bases-loaded walks. App State starting pitcher Claire Eosso issued four walks in the inning.

Louisiana put the game out of reach and built a 9-0 advantage with three-run home runs from Sanders (second inning) and Landry (third inning).

Corbello’s two-run single brought the Ragin’ Cajuns into double digits and an 11-0 lead after three innings. The finishing touches on the scoring came in the fourth inning on an RBI groundout from Landry and a two-run home run by Kelsey Vincent, her 10th of the season.

Stewart was in command from the onset striking out each of the first five Mountaineers she faced and nine of the first 12 that stepped up to the plate.

Kylee Jo Trahan struck out two of the three batters that she faced in recording the three outs in the fifth inning that completed the sweep of App State (9-40, 2-19 Sun Belt).
