Softball: Cajuns Duo Takes Home LSWA Weekly Honors

 LAFAYETTE – Sara Corbello was recognized for her recent power production at the plate and Alex Stewart added another weekly honor as the Louisiana Sports Writers Association (LSWA) handed out its weekly softball honors on Tuesday.
 
Corbello was named LSWA Hitter of the Week and Stewart was awarded LSWA Pitcher of the Week as the No. 5-ranked Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns softball team swept the state’s player of the week honors.
 
Corbello homered in each game of the Ragin’ Cajuns’ Sun Belt Conference series with Texas State at Lamson Park last weekend – the second consecutive weekend she homered in each game of a SBC series.
 
The Lake Charles native increased her season home run total to eight which matches her personal single-season best hit as a freshman (2013) and sophomore (2014).
 
Stewart, who was named Sun Belt Conference Pitcher of the Week on Monday, posted three wins for the Ragin’ Cajuns and extended her string of SBC shutouts to five.

The hurler from Zionsville, Ind., posted her third win over a ranked foe in Game 2 at Baylor on Tuesday and shutout the 18th-ranked Bears in 10 of 13 innings pitched.

LSWA HITTER OF THE WEEK (April 5, 2016)
SARA CORBELLO – UL-LAFAYETTE – Sr. DP
Record: 4-1; Lost to Baylor 2-0; def. Baylor, 4-3. Defeated Texas State 7-0, 5-2, 3-0 … For the second consecutive weekend, Sara Corbello homered in each game of a Sun Belt Conference series. The Cajuns designated player hit one in each game against Texas State, giving her a streak of at least one home run in each of the last six Sun Belt Conference games. The three home runs increased Corbello’s season total to eight which matches her personal single-season best hit as a freshman (2013) and sophomore (2014). Her home run in Saturday’s second game vs. Texas State produced two runs and increased the Ragin’ Cajuns advantage to 5-2. In the series finale on Sunday, Corbello made it 3-for-3 games in launching a homer in the series with a solo home run in the fourth inning that provided Alex Stewart at 2-0 edge.
 

LSWA PITCHER OF THE WEEK (April 5, 2016)
ALEX STEWART – UL-LAFAYETTE — Jr., P
Record: 4-1; Lost to Baylor 2-0; def. Baylor, 4-3. Defeated Texas State 7-0, 5-2, 3-0Alex Stewart posted three wins – including one over a ranked foe – and extended her string of consecutive Sun Belt Conference shutouts to five, leading the Ragin’ Cajuns to a 4-1 mark last week. Stewart picked up her third win of the season over a ranked team with a 4-3 triumph in Game 2 at No. 19 Baylor on Tuesday. She held the Bears scoreless through the first four innings prior to Kelsey Vincent‘s grand slam that gave Louisiana the lead. In 13 innings pitched in the twin bill at Baylor, she shutout the 19th-ranked Bears in 10 of those frames. Stewart pitched 14 innings of scoreless softball and held Texas State to just four hits in collecting two shutouts of the Bobcats in a Sun Belt series at Lamson Park. The Zionsville, Ind., matched her career high with 11 strikeouts in the series opener. She wrapped up the Texas State series with a one-hit shutout, striking out six and facing only three over the minimum. The Cajuns hurler finished the week allowing only five runs and limiting foes to 19 hits over 27 innings pitched, and tallied 24 strikeouts.
