The 17th ranked Ragin’ Cajuns got off to a great start on day one of the Citrus Classic as they run ruled Virginia 9-1 to open the day, then closed things out with a 1-0 win over No.3/1 Alabama to close the day out. Ashley Brignac two-hit the Crimson Tide as Christi Orgeron extended her hitting streak to 17 games with a solo shot that was the difference for the Cajuns (17-1). GAME ONE The Cajuns used one big inning to take a 9-1, five inning victory from the ACC’s Virginia Cavaliers (9-6) in game one of the day. Christina Hamilton (4-1) got the win for the Cajuns, going the distance, giving up just one run on four hits with two strikeouts. At the plate, Christi Orgeron, Megan Granger and Natalie Fernandez all had two hits. Orgeron’s extended her hitting streak to season-high 16 games while both of Granger’s were of the extra base variety. The Cajuns would put up a big number with nine runs in the bottom of the second inning. With one out, Granger got things started off with a double off of the right field fence. After Fernandez delivered an infield single, Granger scored on an errant throw on a double steal attempt. Another infield single, this one by Katie Smith scored Fernandez. Erikka Murphy single to left field to put two one for Gabriele Bridges who drove in both with a two-RBI single. After Bridges advanced to second, Orgeron scored Bridges on an RBI single. After Sarah Draheim and Paige Cormier walked to load the bases, Granger used her second extra base hit of the inning, this one a triple, to clear the bases. Granger also scored on the play after a Cavalier throwing error.
The Cajuns would surrender one run in the top of the fourth inning when Virginia used three hits to scratch across the single score to make the final score of 9-1. GAME TWO Ashley Brignac and the Cajuns used a two-hit shutout and a Christi Orgeron home run to defeat No.3 Alabama (17-1) 1-0 at the Citrus Classic. Brigac (7-0) went the distance, striking out six and giving up just two hits. The Cajuns managed four hits off of Crimson Tide ace Kelsi Dunne (7-1), with Nerissa Myers getting two and Orgeron getting the one that mattered. The Cajuns posted their first threat in the third inning when they used two singles and a hit batter to load the bases, however UL left them loaded and the game remained scoreless. UL would break the tie in the pitching duel in the sixth inning when Orgeron led off the inning with a solo home run over the left field fence. The hit extended Orgeron’s team best hitting streak to 17 games and was her fourth homer of the year. Brignac settled in after allowing two runners to reach base in the third inning, as she retired 12 straight to finish off Alabama, who is ranked No.1 in the ESPN.com/USA Today Top 25 poll. The Cajuns return to action tomorrow when they take on Oregon and Temple on day two of the Citrus Classic at the ESPN Wide World of Sports. ![]()
