The 17th ranked Louisiana’s Ragin’ Cajuns used another solid pitching performance to take the title at the 25th Annual Louisiana Classics with a 4-1 win over Sam Houston State on Sunday afternoon. Ashley Brignac (2-0) started her second game of the weekend, picking up a win in a two-hit, complete game effort. The junior gave up just one run while striking out seven with just two walks. Sarah Draheim and Nerissa Myers each had two hits for the Cajuns who had seven as a team. Senior Gabriele Bridges was walked four times on the day and scored two runs. The win improves the Cajuns (5-0) to 101-11 all-time at the Louisiana Classics. The Cajuns would get the scoring started in the top of the first inning for the fourth time on the weekend, as they scored three runs in the first frame off of Sam Houston starter Tomi Garrison (2-1). Nerissa Myers led the game off with a double down the left line and scored on an RBI single by Christi Orgeron. After the Bearkats pitched around the red-hot Gabriele Bridges, Sarah Draheim delivered an RBI single that scored Orgeron. The Cajuns would score their third run of the inning when Bridges and Megan Granger combined for a double steal that scored Bridges from third base. The Cajuns surrendered a single run in the bottom of the fourth inning, before getting it back in the top of the fifth. Bridges led the inning off with her third walk of the game as the Bearkats continued to throw around the Lafitte native. After a strikeout, Draheim hit a double down the right field line that put runners on second and third with one out. Granger then grounded out to the right side, allowing Bridges to score her second run of the game and 11th of the weekend. The single run in the inning gave the Cajuns a 4-1 lead. Sam Houston (3-2) placed a runner on first base with just one out in the bottom of the sixth, but the Cajuns went around the horn – Granger to Fernandez to Bridges – to escape any trouble. The Cajuns would threaten in the top of the seventh inning as they had two runners in scoring position, but with two outs the Cajuns were unable to scratch a run across. The Cajuns return to action next weekend when they host the Ragin’ Cajuns Invitational at Lamson Park. The Cajuns, Maine, Tennessee State and Stephen F. Austin will take part in the tournament.
