After another 50-win season and another NCAA Regional berth, the awards keep pouring in for the Louisiana’s Ragin’ Cajuns softball team. 

On Thursday, junior Ashley Brignac was named softball’s Capital One Academic All-American of the Year by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA), an honor given to the top member of the Capital One Academic All-American First Team.

Other winners this season of the Capital One Academic All-American of the Year award include Maya Moore of UConn in women’s basketball, Matt Howard of Butler in men’s basketball and Greg McElroy of Alabama in football.

Brignac, a (senior academically) Kinesiology-Exercise Science major has posted a 4.00 GPA throughout her four-year academic career.  Brignac registered a perfect 4.00 GPA throughout her entire high school career as well.  The junior pitcher also had another outstanding season in the circle for the Cajuns.

Brignac, a Louisville Slugger/NFCA Division I All-Region second team selection in 2011, compiled a 32-7 record with 10 shutouts and a 1.50 ERA this season.

The native of River Ridge, La., has pitched seven no-hitters in her career, including three in 2011. Brignac struck out 244 batters in 233.2 innings pitched as a junior. She did not commit an error in 55 fielding chances.

After missing the entire 2010 season and part of 2009 with an injury, Brignac dominated the Sun Belt Conference with a 14-3 record and 1.08 ERA in conference games. For her efforts, she was named the Sun Belt Pitcher of the Year in 2011.

In addition, Brignac was named the conference’s Pitcher of the Week seven times out of 12 possible weeks this year.
