Softball: Brignac and Fernandez Selected to Academic All-Disctrict Team

LAFAYETTE, La. – Senior pitcher Ashley Brignac and sophomore third baseman Natalie Fernandez were named to the 2012 Capital One Academic All-District VI Softball Team as announced by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) on Thursday.
This is the third all-district selection for Brignac, who is the reigning Capital One Academic All-American of the Year. Fernandez earns her first all-district recognition and is one of four infielders selected to the team.
Brignac and Fernandez are eligible to be selected to the Capital One Academic All-America team which will be announced later this month.
“It takes a special kid to be able to excel in the classroom and on the playing field,” co-head coach Michael Lotief said. “On behalf of Ashley and Natalie and our entire team, we would like to thank the UL professors for challenging us in the classroom to be the best, and also for caring and investing and spending the hours to make sure we get the very best educational opportunities.
“These honors are a tribute to our University, our awesome professors and our athletic academic support staff, especially Christy Alford. Lastly, Coach Stefni set the academic standard as an athlete being an academic All-American herself, and as a coach she works tirelessly to make sure our student-athletes pursue excellence in the classroom.”
An exercise science major, Brignac, has maintained a 4.00 GPA throughout her five-year career at UL and was the University of Louisiana’s Most Outstanding Graduate in the fall. She has compiled an 18-2 record on the year, and ranks third on the UL career charts in wins (89) and strikeouts (809).
Fernandez, also an exercise science major, has a cumulative GPA of 3.82 and has been a member of the President’s List (3.8 or higher GPA) twice. The Denham Springs, La. native leads the conference in hitting (.434), and ranks second in both hits (59) and on base percentage (.503).
The Ragin’ Cajuns conclude their regular season against La.- Monroe in a three-game series this weekend, May 5-6 at Lamson Park. Sunday’s game will be senior day, as UL will honor Ashley Brignac, Paige Cormier, Megan Granger, Erikka Murphy, Callie Philen, Christi Orgeron and Katie Smith before the game, which is scheduled to start at noon.
