Softball ‘“ Landry’™s 7 RBI Leads Cajuns to Doubleheader Sweep of Troy

TROY, Ala. – Shellie Landry hit a grand slam in the first game and followed it up with three RBI in game two, and Christina Hamilton tossed 13 shutout innings, to lead the Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns past Troy, 5-0 and 9-0 at the Troy Softball Complex in a Sun Belt Conference doubleheader on Saturday.

Hamilton got the start in both games for the Ragin’ Cajuns (33-7-1, 13-1 SBC), tossing a complete-game shutout in the opener, allowing five hits while striking out 10 and issuing zero walks.  She followed that up with six more shutout innings in the second game, allowing three hits and striking out eight, and once again issuing zero walks.

Landry’s bat gave the Cajuns 4-0 leads in the third inning of both games, hitting her second home run, a grand slam, in game one, and a bases-loaded double in game two, with the Cajuns already up 1-0, to drive in three runs.

She drove in a total of seven runs on the day, with four hits, including three in the second game of the series and scoring two runs.

Despite getting just two hits in the first game and being out-hit by the Trojans, 5-2, the Cajuns made the best of their base-runners, scoring on Landry’s grand slam in the third and Corin Voinché came across on a wild pitch in the fourth inning.

She improved to 18-1 on the season with the two wins, recording her 14th and 15th straight wins.

The Cajuns got their first run in the second game with a solo home run by Samantha Walsh, her sixth of the season, to open the scoring.

Landry added to that lead in the next inning with her bases-loaded double.

After going scoreless in the fourth, the Cajuns put two runs on the board in the fifth inning, on a Kelsey Vincent single and a sacrifice fly from Gabby Felps to put the Cajuns up 6-0.

Walsh added to the Cajuns lead with her second home run of the game in the top of the 7th, giving the Cajuns a 7-0 lead.  It was the first multi-homer game of her career.

The late-inning power display did not finish there, with Shelbi Redfearn hitting her 12th home run of the season two batters latter to make it 9-0.

Sophomore pitcher Victoria Brown pitched the final inning of the doubleheader for the Cajuns, striking out the side, allowing one batter on base, by way of an error.

The Cajuns will return to the diamond on Tuesday when they travel to Waco, Texas for a midweek doubleheader at Baylor, with first pitch scheduled for 4 p.m.  The Cajuns will return to conference action next weekend while remaining in the state of Texas for a three-game series at UT-Arlington.
