Softball:MOBILE, Ala. – Jordan Wallace struck out a season-high 15 batters, en route to a complete game victory over South Alabama on Sunday at Jaguar Field in Mobile, Alabama. The Cajuns scored two runs in the fourth inning and Wallace did the rest to secure a 2-1 win and help the Cajuns improve to 19-11 and 2-4 in Sun Belt play. The Jaguars got the scoring started in the second inning with Kaitlyn Griffith’s third home run of the season. It was the first hit of the game for either team and the first time this series that the Jaguars scored first. In all three games this series, the team that scored first went on to lose the game. The Cajuns responded in the fourth inning with the only runs they needed. Sarah Draheim led the inning off with a single down the right field line and was sacrificed to second by Matte Haack. Shellie Landry followed that up with a double down the right field line to score Draheim. Sara Corbello continued the assault in the next at bat with a single to center field, scoring Landry and giving the Cajuns their first lead of the day. The Cajuns threatened in the top of the fifth inning but came up empty. With Leandra Maly on second, Brianna Cherry sent a ball to the deepest part of the park and was robbed of a home run by centerfielder Britany Campbell. The Jaguars would also threaten late in the game, loading the bases with one out in the sixth inning. Wallace would take care of it herself and strike out the next two batters and preserve the lead. She also picked up two strikeouts in the seventh with one runner on to end the game and pick up her 11th win of the season. Wallace tossed 7.0 innings, allowing just one run on five hits and no walks (one hit batter), while striking out 15 batters. Her 15 strikeouts is a career high for games that don’t go into extra innings. She struck out 16 batters last season against South Alabama in a 10.0 inning outing. Maly picked up two hits on the day for her second career multi-hit game, and Natalie Fernandez also picked up a hit, finishing the day 1-for-4. The Cajuns will now travel to Starkville, Mississippi for a weekday non-conference match up with Mississippi State University on Wednesday. First pitch for the game is scheduled for 6:00 P.M. That will lead into a nine-day break from games for the Cajuns before they take on Florida International at Lamson Park on March 29 and 30th. – – Ragin’ Cajuns – – Nick Ross
