LAFAYETTE, La. – After scoring four goals on the weekend, which included her first career goal, Ragin’ Cajuns forward Annika Schmidt was named Sun Belt Player of the Week, as announced by the conference office on Tuesday morning.

"I’m very happy for Annika," head coach Scot Wieland said.  "This is very well deserved.  She has come into our program with such a great attitude and work ethic.  She has been incredibly well received by her entire team as a freshman, because she has such a great and pleasant demeanor and is never without a smile."

Schmidt scored her first career goal on Friday in a 1-1 tie with Southern, and added three more goals against Northwestern State on Sunday, for the first Cajuns hat-trick since Callie Oliver did so October 31, 2008.

It is also the first player of the week honor for a member of the Ragin’ Cajuns since Oliver won the award on November 4, 2008.

A native of Nufringen, Germany, Schmidt is the first European recruit to play under Wieland at Louisiana.  She currently leads the squad with nine points, scoring four goals and adding an assist.  This is her first player of the week honor.

"Her technical training in Germany has really paid off," Wieland continued.  "She is a smart player and she always gets herself in the right position.  She is very composed when it comes to finishing.  This is a great start for her as a freshman and we hope that there is a lot more of these honors ahead in her future as a Ragin’ Cajun."

The Cajuns will return to the pitch on Friday at 7:00 p.m. when Louisiana Tech comes to town for the final game of a five-game homestand.  They will finish up the weekend when they travel to Nicholls State on Sunday.
