Soccer Posts Win in Season Finale 10/26/12Soccer Posts Win in Season Finale 10/26/12 LAFAYETTE – The Ragin’ Cajuns soccer team picked up a 2-1 win over UL-Monroe in the season finale on Friday at the Cajuns Track/Soccer Facility sending the 2012 senior class out on a winning note.
The Cajuns wore uniforms with pink numerals and a pink Ragin’ Cajuns logo in support of Breast Cancer Awareness month. With the win, the Cajuns finish the season with a record of 8-10-2 overall and 2-6-2 in Sun Belt Conference play. UL went undefeated (1-0-1) in its last two matches earning a win and a draw. The Warhawks (4-15-0, 1-9-0 Sun Belt) grabbed an early 1-0 lead in the 15th minute when Bethany Park received a ball off a looping feed from midfield and beat Cory DeMaro over the top to net her first goal of the season. The Ragin’ Cajuns stormed back in the second half, scoring back-to-back goals to remain perfect at home all-time against their in-state rival. Senior Kayla Henrie scored her first goal of the season in the 53rd minute, tying the game 1-1 after she placed a shot from just inside the 18. UL took the lead less than a minute later after senior Erin Lynn played a ball through to Hayden Gibson whose cross was one timed by senior Maci Andrus. Andrus’ third goal of the season gave the Cajuns a 2-1 advantage. Offensively, Gibson led the way with six shots, four being on target. She also notched her third assist of the season. Freshmen goalkeepers Cory DeMaro and Claire Steward played their first significant minutes as a Cajun with DeMaro earning her first win, posting two saves in net for the Cajuns. UL outshot the Warhawks 28-7 in the match, while also holding a 12-5 advantage on corners. Friday’s match wrapped up the eighth season under the direction of head coach Scot Wieland.
