NEW ORLEANS – Louisiana’s Gwen Mummert earned her first weekly women’s soccer honors on Tuesday after the Ragin’ Cajuns sophomore defender was named the Sun Belt Conference Defensive Player of the Week in a release by the league office.
Gwen Mummert

The weekly award for Mummert, a native of Berlin, Germany, was the first by a Louisiana player since Ashleigh Cade on Sept. 26, 2017. Mummert became the first Ragin’ Cajuns defender to be named Defensive Player of the Week since Grace Howell-Harries claimed accolades in the 2013 season.

Mummert helped Louisiana to a scoreless draw in its Sun Belt Conference opener against South Alabama last Sunday. She helped lead a defensive effort by the Ragin’ Cajuns that kept the league’s top scoring team from hitting the back of the net while limiting USA’s Briana Morris – the league’s top scorer – to no shots in the 110-minute contest.

On the season, Mummert has scored a pair of goals and added an assist in 845 minutes on the pitch while eclipsing the 90-minute mark in eight of Louisiana’s nine matches on the season.

Mummert has been a key leader in Louisiana’s performance that has recorded three consecutive shutouts at home to open the 2019 season under first-year coach Lance Key.

Louisiana (4-3-2, 0-0-1 SBC) will return to action on Friday (Sept. 27) when it travels to Jonesboro, Ark., to face Arkansas State (5-3, 1-0 SBC) in a 3 p.m. contest. The Ragin’ Cajuns will close out the weekend on Sunday (Sept. 29) against league rival Little Rock (3-5-3, 0-0-1 SBC) in a 1 p.m., match.
