TROY, Ala.-Louisiana’s Ragin’ Cajuns women’s soccer team had a record-setting performance on Sunday afternoon as they shutout Troy, 2-0, in Troy, Ala.  With the shutout victory, senior goalkeeper Kristen Malen set the record for most wins in a season and career shutouts.

With the win, the Cajuns (9-6-4, 5-2-3 Sun Belt) secured their first winning season in school history.  The victory also set the record for most wins in a season, breaking the 2006 total of eight.  UL’s five Sun Belt victories ties for the most in school history.

Entering the weekend, Malen sat just one victory and one shutout shy of two Cajuns records.  Malen, who currently holds the record for most career victories, was tied for second place for most wins in a single season – tied with her own 2004 total of seven.  She tied the record on Friday night against South Alabama and set the school record on Sunday afternoon against the Trojans.

“Wins, especially a shutout on the road; those are great wins,” head coach Scot Wieland comment after the match.  “It is never easy on Sunday’s at someone else’s place.  Troy plays hard and we knew they would be ready to protect their field.  Coming away with a 2-0 win was great for us and I couldn’t be prouder of this team.”

Freshman standout Kelli Jestes got things going for the Cajuns.  Jestes scored her team-leading eighth goal of the season to put the Cajuns ahead, 1-0.

Eight goals in one season put the freshman in second place for most goals in a single season.  She trails Stacy Smith (2002) by two for most goals in a season.  Smith set the record in her only season at UL with 10.

Jestes’ goal came off of an assist from Heather Fuller.  The helper was Fuller’s third of the weekend.  She had a pair of assists in the Cajuns’ 3-2 victory on Friday night against South Alabama.

Emily Black netted her first goal of the season to give the Cajuns a 2-0 advantage.  Black scored a pair of goals in her freshman campaign last season.

Black’s goal came off of an assist by Jestes.  Jestes’ three points in the match moved her into second place for most points in a season.  Once again, Jestes trails Smith for the top spot.  Smith set the school record with 21 points in 2002, scoring 10 goals while adding an assist.

Leading 2-0, the Ragin’ Cajuns defense took over.

The Cajuns defense has quietly worked in the background this season, but their efforts have not gone un-noticed.  The UL defense has held opponents to an all-time low 27 goals on the season.  Defenders Gayla Foster, Jenn Hungate, Erika Saffer and Lyndsey Winters have joined with captains Bridgette Adorno and Kerri Luyties to help the Cajuns to six shutouts on the season.  The six shutouts ties for the most in school history.

The Ragin’ Cajuns women’s soccer team returns to action on Friday, Nov. 2, as they conclude the regular season with a match against Louisiana-Monroe.  The contest is slated to kickoff at 4:00 p.m. in Monroe.  The Cajuns will be looking to continue their record breaking season as they will go for their first double-digit win season in school history.
