Soccer Earns NCAA APR HonorSoccer Receives NCAA APR Honor LAFAYETTE, La. — The University of Louisiana soccer program has received a Division I Academic Progress Rate public recognition award from the NCAA for posting a multi-year APR score in the top 10 percent of all squads in their respective sport. The public recognition award is part of the broad Division I academic reform effort. “We are truly honored to have the Cajuns soccer program recognized by the NCAA,” UL soccer coach Scot Wieland said. “The APR is the number one thing that coaches concern themselves with when they go recruiting because it is imperative that you bring in student-athletes who will not only fit into your program, but who also fit into the mission of the university. “We’ve been fortunate to find a group of student-athletes who have excelled both on the field and in the classroom. They not only love this university, but they also want to represent it as best as possible. “It has always been my goal to try and provide an environment in which our student-athletes can be successful. I believe that we have been able to create that environment here at the University of Louisiana, and it shows in our ability to retain and graduate our student-athletes, "Wieland added. Soccer receives the honor for having a multi-year rate of 997, including a perfect 1,000 during 2010-11. All 25 soccer student-athletes remained at UL, made satisfactory academic progress towards their degrees, and remained eligible to compete during 2010-11. The Cajuns soccer program was one of 12 Sun Belt Conference teams that were recognized, and the only soccer team to earn the honor. Each year the NCAA honors selected Division I sports teams by publicly recognizing their latest multi-year NCAA Division I Academic Progress Rate (APR). These awards are part of the overall Division I academic reform effort and is intended to highlight teams that demonstrate a commitment to academic progress and retention of student-athletes by achieving the top APRs within their respective sports. The APR provides a real-time look at a team’s academic success each semester by tracking the academic progress of each student-athlete on scholarship. The APR accounts for eligibility, retention and graduation and provides a measure of each team’s academic performance. Multi-year APRs for all Division I sports teams, including the teams receiving public recognition, will be announced June 20. Brian McCann
