Soccer: Cajuns Roll to Historic Tenth Win – Faces Denver in 1st Round of SBC TournamentLouisiana’s Ragin’ Cajuns soccer team hosted La.-Monroe Friday afternoon in what turned out to be a historic match for the Cajuns. On a day in which the Cajuns honored six seniors, UL put up just as many goals as they shutout the Warhawks by a final score of 6-0. The win improved the Cajuns to 10-10-0 overall on the season, giving UL the first 10-win season in school history. The Cajuns also tied a school record with their fifth conference win as they moved to 5-6-0 in Sun Belt play. UL also posted its seventh shutout of the season, another Cajuns record. The Cajuns got the scoring started when senior Kelli Jestes put home a cross off of the foot of another senior, Courtney Hofland. The 22nd minute score was the fifth of the year for Jestes and the assist was the fifth for Hofland, a team-high. The Cajuns would get a slew of goals later in the half as they would net three shots in less than two minutes to take a 4-0 lead. Gayla Foster scored the first as she was in the box to collect a 30th minute rebound off of Warhawks goalie Alex Holland and put the loose ball into the back of the net. The next two scores would come from Cayla Chatman in 31st and 32nd minutes. On her first goal, Chatman was on the scoring end of a set piece. Melissa Minton and Megan Riley were credited with the assists. Chatman would extend to lead to four goals less than a minute later when Holland misplayed a ball in the box that Chatman put home. The four goal margin remained for the remainder of the first half and most of the second half until UL tacked on two late scores. Hofland put home a ball off of a cross from senior Chelsea Balestra in the 89th minute to extend the lead to five for the Cajuns. Another senior, Carleigh Martin was able to net the Cajuns final goal less than a minute later as she slid into a pass from yet another senior, Jordan Blevins, to give the Cajuns their final 6-0 margin. Martin, a usual lock-down defender for the Cajuns, netted the first goal of her career with less than two minutes remaining in her final home game. On the evening, the Cajuns posted a total of 19 shots, including 14 on goal, as they set a school record with six goals in a Sun Belt contest. Amanda Moorefield played the first half in goal for UL and picked up the win, moving to 10-9 on the season. Lauren Berlingo came in at halftime and preserved the shutout. With the regular season done, the Cajuns now look to the Sun Belt Tournament next week. UL will be the eighth seed in the tournament that will take place in Bowling Green, Ky. starting next Wednesday. The Cajuns are set to face Sun Belt regular season champion Denver in the first round. — Ragin’ Cajuns — ![]()
