LAFAYETTE – The Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns soccer team set four single-match school-records and tied a school record for goals scored in defeating Alcorn State, 10-0, in the home-opener on Sunday at the Ragin’ Cajuns Soccer/Track Facility.
The Ragin’ Cajuns (1-1) scored three goals in a 5:31 span early in the first half to take a 3-0 lead in the 16th minute. Louisiana set single-match school-records for shots (39), points scored (30), shots on goal (25) and assists (10) in claiming its home opener against Alcorn (0-1).
Louisiana senior forward Annika Schmidt scored in the 11th minute off an assist from sophomore defender Rebecca Foley and senior midfielder Yazmin Montoya.
Montoya scored in the 15th minute off an assist from junior forward Ashleigh Cade. Senior forward Mackenzie Higgins added a goal in the 16th minute off an assist from senior defender Carly Ellender.
After a 35-minute lightning delay, Louisiana came out and scored three more goals to take a commanding 6-0 lead into halftime.
The Ragin’ Cajuns added four goals in the second half, including the final two goals from junior forward Haley Boroch. Boroch also had one assist in the match.
Louisiana was led offensively by Montoya, who was named to the Sun Belt Preseason All-Conference Team, and Higgins. Montoya and Higgins both recorded two goals and one assist in the match.
Ragin’ Cajuns freshman goalkeeper Mackenzie Lee started the game and played the first half in goal. Sophomore goalkeeper Kristen Eddy played the second half and recorded one save.
Louisiana travels to face Nicholls State on Friday, Aug. 26 in a 4 p.m. match. The Ragin’ Cajuns return home against Southern Miss on Sunday, Aug. 28 in a 1 p.m. match at the Ragin’ Cajuns Soccer/Track Facility.
