Soccer: Cajuns Eliminated from SBC Tourney by South Alabama

Cosette Morche

EMERSON, Ga. – The eighth-seeded Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns soccer team were eliminated by the No. 1 seed South Alabama Jaguars by a 7-1 final at the LakePoint Sporting Community.

The Cajuns (8-10-2) took an early lead in the 14th minute on a goal by junior Kimberly Grasso, her fifth this season which matched a career high.

South Alabama responded with the match’s equalizer nearly three minutes later in the 17th minute on a goal by Rio Hardy, which was assisted by Alyssa Mayer.

Nearly 28 ½ minutes into the match, the Jaguars scored what proved to be the match winner when Charde Hannah scored on an unassisted goal. South Alabama took the 2-1 lead into the intermission.

South Alabama’s Ashlynn Jones broke the match open in the second half, scoring twice in the first six minutes to make it a three goal match, as she was assisted by teammates Steffi Hardy and Jemma Purfield.

The match marked the first time the Cajuns and Jaguars met in postseason play.

Freshman goalkeeper Cosette Morche recorded six saves, becoming just the third keeper in Cajuns history to reach the 100-save plateau in a single season, joining Anne Corbello (144 in 2000) and Liza Preseault (112 in 2002).
