The Daily Advertiser picked up several awards, including for best special section and prep writer of the year, at the Louisiana Sports Writers Association Awards on Sunday in Natchitoches.

The Advertiser won Best Special Section in Class II for its 2013 prep football edition. "A massive undertaking that was successfully pulled off," a judge commented. "The design was very pleasing. The template for each preview page provided concise information at a glance. It’s a hefty section, but it well organized and reader friendly."

The 2013 New Orleans Bowl preview section won third-place honors. Also, the Advertiser was second in Best Section for Class II.

Sports editor Kevin Foote was named Prep Writer of the Year, Best Sports Makeup and was third for Columnist of the Year in Class II.

"What stands out about this writer’s work is the consistency of the writing," a judge wrote. "Each of the entries presented was well-presented, offering the information needed, while doing so in an entertaining and interesting way that maintains the reader’s interest from start to finish."

Tim Buckley was second in Pro Features in Class III for his writing about pro golfer John Daly coming to Acadiana and participating in the Chitimahca Louisiana Open.

Gannett Louisiana’s Glenn Guilbeau was third in Best Pro Column in Class I for his piece on New Orleans Saints head coach Sean Payton firing then-defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo. He also got third place for Best College Column on LSU running back Jeremy Hill being released from jail on the day Tigers’ practice opened.

Athletic Network Footnote: Congratulations to Kevin Foote and his staff of sports writers at The Advertiser.
