Obituary: Rolando Surita – Football 1970-73, Baseball 1974 – December 6, 2014

Former Eagle Pass Eagles standout athlete Rolando Surita passes away

Former Eagle Pass High School Eagles standout athlete Rolando Surita, age 62, passed away on Saturday, December 6, 2014, succumbing to a long battle with cancer, according to his daughter Claudia Surita.

Eagle Passans mourn the loss of Rolando Surita who is considered to be one of the greatest athletes in the history of Eagle Pass High School. Surita was a multiple-sport athlete, lettering in football, basketball, baseball, and track and field. Surita led the Eagles to the state baseball championship tournament in 1970 and was named an all-state pitcher. He excelled in all four sports. Surita went on to play NCAA college football with the University of Louisiana-Lafayette Ragin Cajuns.

Surita had a successful career in the oil and gas exploration business, traveling across the United States and abroad in pursuit of his work.

Surita loved his family and life to the fullest. He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and Eagle Passans, but will never be forgotten. May he rest in peace.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Yeager-Barrera Mortuary in Eagle Pass, Texas with visitation to be held on Saturday, December 13th, at 10 A.M. followed by a mass. For more information, please contact Yeager-Barrera Mortuary at (830) 773-3211.

Information provided by Nathan "Nat" Thornton, Jr., a teammate of Rolando, who along with Cleophus Samuels attend the funeral. 
Nat indicated that the memorial service was attended by a host of family, friends, former coaches, and elected officials.

Rolando was a Health and Physical Education major and a joy to be around. Very quite and rather shy, he had a air of quiet confidence about himself and those who thought his shyness meant he was timid, learned differently when they opposed him on the playing field.
