George Irwin Fawcett Obituary
Lafayette – A gathering of family and friends to celebrate the life of George Irwin Fawcett, 76, will be held on Saturday, January 5, 2019 from 11:00 A.M. until 2:00 P.M. at Martin & Castille Funeral Home DOWNTOWN location.

A private inurnment will be held at Lafayette Memorial Park Cemetery.

Survivors include his loving wife of 54 years, Marieta "Missie" Fawcett of Lafayette; one daughter, Karen Fawcett Broussard and her husband, Anthony Broussard of Lafayette; one sister, Carol Sater of Spokane Valley, Washington; one brother, Robert "Bob" Fawcett and his wife, Kimberly Fawcett of Jennings, LA; one grandson, Cade Stevens and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Irwin "Bud" Fawcett and Mary "Betty" Fawcett; one brother, Frederick Fawcett; father-in-law, Clive Hylton; mother-in-law, Anna Rae Morrish Hylton and one brother-in-law, Bob Sater.

A native of New Orleans and a resident of Lafayette for most of his life, George was a loving and caring husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend. He retired from SLEMCO after 41 years. He was an avid fan and supporter of UL athletics, especially the softball and baseball teams. George played an integral part in the funding of the UL Softball Indoor Hitting Facility. He was a proud member of the inaugural class inducted into the Louisiana 4-H Hall of Fame. He loved spending time outdoors and keeping his yard pristine.

Memorial contributions can be made in George’s name to the UL Softball or Baseball programs, 705 E. St. Mary Blvd., Lafayette, LA 70503.

A heartfelt appreciation is extended by the Fawcett family to the ICU and 8th floor doctors, nurses and staff at Lafayette General Medical Center as well as the doctors, nurses and staff of St. Joseph’s Hospice – Carpenter House.

He and Jerry Meaux, President of SLEMCO and former assistant coach of Beryl Shipley, were instrumental in the realization of the Shipley Bust, which is located near the entrance of the Cajundome.
