Evelyn Merrifield Carnal, age 90, of Lecompte, passed away Monday, July 21, 2014 in her residence.

Evelyn is preceded in death by her husband of 65 years, Walter F. Carnal, Jr. and her sister, Helen Williamson.

Evelyn graduated from Lecompte High School. She went on to graduate from USL in 1940 with a degree in Chemistry and was also on the championship debate team for four years. She was a graduate from the University of Denver in Speech Pathology, and earned a Master of Arts in special education from Northwestern State University in 1967. Evelyn served a 30 year career as a speech pathologist at the Louisiana Special Education Center. She also wrote a grant to create the Lecompte Historic Museum and worked to complete that project. She was active as a member of Holy Comforter Episcopal Church in Lecompte. She created four historic markers in the town of Lecompte and was active in the Lecompte Garden Club for many years. She served two terms on the Rapides Parish Library Board and was named one of the Women of Achievement by Rapides Regional Medical Center and the Town Talk in 2001. Evelyn was the foundation and heart of her family. She gave tirelessly of her time and talents to her church, her family, and her community. She truly lived by the belief that it is better to give than to receive.

The family would like to extend heartfelt thanks to all of Evelyn’s caretakers, especially Miss Dana Seal for her loving devotion to our mother and father in their deepest hours of need.

Visitation will be held from 1 p.m. until time-of-service at the church Thursday July 24, 2014.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to Holy Comforter Church, P.O. Box 1068, Lecompte, LA 71346.
