Dr. Octave Joseph "O.J." Tournillon III, a native of New Orleans, LA and longtime resident of Carriere, MS, passed away Monday, November 24, 2014 in Slidell, LA at 87 years of age.
Dr. Tournillon was an Administrator, Principal, and Coach in the New Orleans public school district where he assumed the position of District Superintendent. He coached for many years and was chosen as "Coach of the Year" and received additional honors including Holy Cross Man of the Year, Mayoralty of N.O. Merit award, Citizen of the Year, Educator of the Year and many others. Dr. O. J. Tournillon was President of the Greater New Orleans Officials Association, LA High School Athletic Association, New Orleans Business Association, Principals’ Association of Orleans Parish, Eastern New Orleans Kiwanis Club and member of many business and civic organizations. He was a member of St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church, and a veteran of WWII and the Korean War. He was a loving husband, devoted father, and mentor to countless people.
Survivors include his wife of 61 years, Evelyn Mercier Tournillon; his 5 children, Cynthia Tournillon Bachemin and husband Ralph, Michael Octave Tournillon and wife Tessie, Terence "Terry" Joseph Tournillon and wife Irinia, Octave "Jay" Joseph Tournillon IV and wife Lisa, and Stacey Ann Tournillon Walker and husband Clint; his 11 grandchildren, Lou, Matthew, and Brooke Dickinson; Erin Tournillon Gill; Emily, Stuart, Adam, Chad, and Cody Tournillon, and Marshall and Grant Walker; his 6 great grandchildren, Layton, Ella, and Isabelle Gill; Cassandra, Madelynn, and Zoey Dickinson.
Visitation will be Friday, November 28, 2014 from 11:00am until 1:00pm at St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church, 1000 Goodyear Blvd., Picayune, MS with mass of Christian burial to follow at 1 PM. Burial will be in New Palestine Cemetery under the direction of McDonald Funeral Home. Service will be officiated by Monsignor "Father Bob" Massett.
