"Sonny" Roy Jr. Lafayette Funeral services were held Tuesday morning at St. Genevieve Catholic Church for Daniel "Sonny" Roy Jr.. 59. who died at 11:28 p.m. Saturday. Oct. 28. 1995 at Tulane Medical Center In New Orleans. Interment was In Greenlawn Memorial Gardens Mausoleum. A native of the Lafayette-Carencro area, he had served as a football assistanthead basketball coach at Breaux Bridge High School in 1958. and was head football coach for two years (1959-60). guiding the Tigers to two district titles and a 20-3 record. He also coached in the football, baseball and basketball programs at USL and was USL’s director of athletics for four years beginning in 1978. For the past 13 years he was vice president of sales at MarCon Manufacturing Co. in Lafayette. Survivors include his wife, Breaux Bridge native Barbara Harrington Roy of Lafayette; two sons, Kevin D. Roy of Carencro and John R. Roy of Lafayette, a daughter, Sherri Ann Roy of Lafayette: two sisters. Sister Doris Ann Roy. S.E.C.. and Margaret "Peggy" Roy, both of Lafayette; and eight grandchildren. LAFAYETTE – Daniel ‘Sonny" Roy Jr., former athletic director and longtime athletic department member of the University of Southwestern Louisiana, died Saturday. He was 59. Roy suffered a heart attack and died at Tulane Medical Center in New Orleans, following Southwestern Louisiana’s victory over Tulane at the Superdome.
"There’s no way we can express our feelings of loss," athletic director Nelson Schexnayder said in a statement. ‘Sonny was one of the people who made this athletic program what it is today, and our program and our university have suffered a great loss." Roy joined Southwestern Louisiana’s athletic staff in 1961 as head baseball coach and assistant to basketball coach Beryl Shipley. He left for the 1963 football season, but returned in February of 1964 as assistant football and baseball coach. He served as assistant foot ball coach for 11 years before moving to the University of Texas-El Paso for two seasons. He returned again to Southwestern Louisiana in 1977 as Director of Auxiliary Services, and in 1978 became its athletic director, a post he held for five years in helping guide the university to NCAA Division LA status. He left in 1982 to work for Mar-Con Manufacturing Co. Inc., where he was vice president of sales for 13 years. Roy began his career in 1958 as the head basketball coach and assistant football coach at Breaux Bridge High School, and was the head football coach there for two years until he joined Southwestern Louisiana. He is survived by his wife Barbara; a daughter, Sherri Ann Roy, two sons, Kevin Roy and John Roy, and two sisters, all of Lafayette; and eight grandchildren. Visitation is scheduled for Monday from 9 a.m. until 9 p.m. and Tuesday from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. at Delhomme Funeral Home in Lafayette. Funeral services will he held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Genevieve Church in Lafayette. Lead information provided by Margaret Roy. * * * * * * * Dan "Sonny" Roy, Jr. 1936 – 1995 "Sonny" was the son of the late Daniel Roy, Sr., and former Emma Conque Roy. A native of the Lafayette-Carencro area, he spent most of his adult life in Acadiana. He graduated from Carencro High in 1954 and earned his bachelor’s degree in H&PE at USL in 1958. While attending USL, he was a four-year varsity letterman as a baseball pitcher and member of the basketball team. Roy entered the coaching profession in 1958 as football assistant and head basketball coach at Breaux Bridge High, moving up to head football coach there in ’59 and ’60, winning 20 of 23 games and claiming two district titles. His success at Breaux Bridge earned him an appointment to the USL athletic staff in ’61 as head baseball coach. His duties also included serving as assistant basketball coach under Beryl Shipley. He left USL for one football season at Glen Oaks High School in Baton Rouge before returning in February of ’64 as assistant football and head baseball coach for the Cajuns. "Sonny" spent 11 years as assistant under Russ Faulkinberry and Augie Tammeriello before moving in ’75 to U. of Texas El Paso for two seasons. He returned again to USL in ’77 as Director of Auxillary Services, and in ’78 was appointed Athletic Director, a post he held for four years. It was in this span that USL moved to Division I-A status. In 1982 Roy entered the private sector as vice president of sales for Mar-Con Manufacturing Co., Inc., and held that post for 13 years. Under Roy’s leadership the company grew from upstart newcomer into a major player in the intensely competitive industry. "Sonny" died at Tulane Medical Center in New Orleans after suffering a heart attack following USL’s football contest against Tulane.
