Men’s Tennis: Wahlborg, Kramarov Reach Semis for Cajuns on ‘Battle on the Bayou’

LAFAYETTE – Coleman Wahlborg and Vlad Kramarov each recorded a pair of victories in Flight 1 singles play to help pace the Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns men’s tennis team after the first day of the Battle on the Bayou at the Culotta Tennis Center.

Freshman Jamie Fraser reached the semifinals of Flight 2 singles for Louisiana while the Ragin’ Cajuns had a pair of doubles teams reach the semifinals.

Action on the final day will begin at 8:30 a.m. with the doubles semifinal, followed by the doubles championship at 9:30. Singles play begins at 11:30 a.m. with the main draw and consolation championships set for 4 p.m.

Admission to the event is free.

Wahlborg earned a pair of three-set victories to reach the semifinals, where he will face Juan Cruz Soria of South Alabama. Wahlborg opened the day with a come-from-behind 4-6, 6-4, 10-8 win over Biyik Akinshemoyin of Texas A&M-Corpus Christi before defeating New Orleans’ Nicolas Kramer, 6-4, 3-6, 10-8.

Kramarov, who will face top-seeded Tuki Jacobs of South Alabama, joined Wahlborg in the semifinals after claiming a 6-0, 6-1 win over Wen-Po Tseng of Southern Miss, before defeating Cagatay Soke of A&M-Corpus Christi, 6-2, 4-6, 10-7.

Fraser claimed a 6-3, 6-7, 10-7 win over USM’s Rakshit Rishi in the quarterfinals, where he advanced to face second-seeded Chad Nguyen of A&M-Corpus Christi. Freshman Silvio Cocito-Monoc rallied to claim a 1-6, 6-4, 11-9 win over UNO’s Luis Albuquerque in the first round before falling to top-seeded Clement Marzol of South Alabama, 6-1, 6-3.

In doubles, Kramarov and Pearse Dolan reached the semifinals after defeating Federico Boscarino and Federico Staksrud of UNO, 6-2, before defeating the top-seeded team of Cruz Soria and Olivier Gingras of South Alabama, 6-4.

Wahlborg and Eric Perez, the No. 2-seeded team in doubles, claimed a 7-5 win over the UNO tandem of Albuquerque and Jeffrey Hsu.
