Men’s Tennis: UL tennis recruiting class ranked among top mid-majors

The Advertiser, June 28, 2016

Coming off a 17-11 record on the court last season, the Ragin’ Cajuns men’s tennis team earned off-season honors as its 2016-17 recruiting class was ranked 15th overall among all mid-major programs, according to a release Tuesday by TennisRecruiting.net.

The Ragin’ Cajuns four-man recruiting class was ranked among all colleges in all divisions except for those in the Power 5 conferences and the Ivy League. UL added Australians Jamie Fraser and Pearse Dolan, Rob Reynolds of New Zealand and Silvio Cocito-Monoc of St. Thomas Aquinas in Hammond.

“This recruiting class is special in multiple ways,” head coach Mark Jeffrey said. “First, there is no question these guys can bring their game to the Sun Belt (Conference) and compete very well. This team has a lot of heart and passion for the game, so that is what we are really excited about. The ‘want to’ of this recruiting class is very high. It reminds me a lot of the 2012 team that was ranked as high as 47th nationally … our best team ranking since 2006 (36th).  These new recruits want it.”

UL earned wins over a pair of nationally ranked programs (North Florida and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi) during the 2016 season. Senior Edgar Lopez capped off the season earning All-Sun Belt Conference honors in both singles and doubles with Eric Perez earning All-SBC honors in doubles with Arthur Libaud being named the league’s Freshman of the Year.

“The Sun Belt gets tougher each year, so 2016-17 will be no exception,” Jeffrey said. “We have to keep raising the bar to stay with the other teams.”
