Men’s Tennis: Murray Grabs Sun Belt Player of the Week Honors
Contact: Jeff Schneider
Senior Carlin Murray became the second Ragin’ Cajuns men’s tennis player to earn Sun Belt Conference Player of the Week honors, the conference office announced on Tuesday.
“Carlin is very deserving of this award,” head coach Mark Jeffrey said. “To say he had a good week is an understatement. To beat a player who is top 14 in the nation with a win streak of 17 straight matches is incredible. It was one of the best matches I have seen since my four years in Lafayette, and probably the biggest win by a Cajun in over a decade”.
Murray was instrumental in the Cajuns 3-2 week as UL advanced to the finals of the HEB Tournament of Champions. The senior defeated the 14th ranked player in the nation in the Cajuns dual match against No.9 Kentucky coming from behind to defeat Anthony Rossi in three sets 5-7, 6-4, 6-3.
“Carlin works very hard as a student and athlete and he is the whole package,” Jeffrey added. “Being in a very demanding major (accounting), he balances a high level of academics well with his high level athletics. That is not something that is easy to do, and he should be commended for it”.
“I can say that Carlin has become a better player today than when he first walked through the door here. That is something that I am very proud of not just for the program but for Carlin to achieve such a high level of success. Carlin gives so much to his tennis that he is very deserving of this award and the success to this point he is having in the season”.
The Philadelphia, Pa. native also posted two wins in doubles play on the week to go with his three wins in singles play to improve to 5-6 in singles competition and 4-4 in doubles.
The Cajuns return to action tomorrow at 2 p.m. when they host Nicholls State in a dual match at Cajun Courts.
