Men’s Tennis: Men’s Tennis With Strong Showing at Southern Regionals

UL Men's Tennis

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns men’s tennis team completed their second tournament of the 2015 fall season at the Southern Regionals on the campus of the University of Alabama this past weekend.

The Cajuns had strong performances from a pair of doubles pairings of Arthur Libaud/Will Huyton and Edgar Lopez/Eric Perez. In the Doubles Main Draw, Libaud and Huyton eliminated Ole Miss’ Ricardo Jorge/Robert Mounger, 8-6 in the second round. They followed with an 8-6 victory over Sun Belt Conference opponent Pablo Moreno/Giovani Samaha of the Troy Trojans. In the doubles semifinal round, Huyton and Libaud took UAB’s Christian Coetzee/Luiz Felipe Pinto to three sets before falling, 2-6, 7-5, 10-8.

Louisiana’s second doubles pairing of Lopez/Perez prevailed over Southern Miss’ Jorman Reyes/Tarun Surat, 8-7 (10) in the second round before falling victim to Alabama’s duo of Korey Lovette/Mazen Osama by an 8-6 final.

"I thought the performances of our doubles teams were the highlight of the weekend," Ragin’ Cajuns head coach Mark Jeffrey said. "All of our teams are progressing along and we are starting to find partnerships [in doubles competition], which is a good thing to establish early in the fall season.

"Arthur and Will continued their good form from the Cajun Classic knocking out the number one seeds and coming within a couple of points from beating the eventual champions in UAB."

In the Singles Main Draw, Libaud defeated Mississippi State’s Trevor Foshey, 6-4, 6-4 in the first round, but lost to Troy’s Samaha, 6-4, 6-2 in the second round of the bracket.

"After the summer we knew we were going to be a long way from our best early in the season and that is showing. I think at this point of the [fall] season, were are exactly where I thought we would be in our progression."

The Cajuns will travel to New Orleans this weekend to participate in the UNO Invitational from Friday, Oct. 23 through Sunday, Oct. 25.
