Men’s Tennis: Men’s Tennis Earns ITA National Ranking

Contact: Jeff Schneider

After defeating two ranked teams to reach the HEB Tournament of Champions final, the Ragin’ Cajuns men’s tennis team earned their first national ranking in five years with their appearance in the ITA Top 75 Team Poll on Tuesday.

“This ranking is representative of a team buying in and working hard as a unit,” head coach Mark Jeffrey said. “Our guys strive to be better each day out. I know it sounds like a cliché, but that is what these guys do every day.”

The Cajuns (7-5) are currently ranked 57th in the poll after posting a 3-5 record against ranked teams in 2012. Louisiana upset No.61 South Alabama 4-1 in the quarterfinals of the HEB Tournament of Champions last Friday. The Cajuns then turned around and topped No.64 Oklahoma State by the same margin later in the day.

UL’s last national ranking came in 2007 when the Ragin’ Cajuns boasted a No.70 ranking in the ITA poll.

“We need to continue to work hard as a team,” Jeffrey added. “I see us doing just that as this is a great group of guys to work with.

Louisiana is slated to host five straight home matches at Cajun Courts starting with an in-state tilt against Nicholls State tomorrow at 2 p.m.
