Yanick Mandl, first row third on left, won the flight A singles.

It has been a long time since a Louisiana tennis player has won the UL Invitational Flight A singles but that’s exactly what the Cajuns’ Yanick Mandl did Sunday morning.  Mandl defeated Olivier Borsos of Louisiana State 6-7, 6-1, 6-0 in a grueling three-hour final match.

"This is great for Yanick and our team," said UL head coach Mark Jeffrey.  "I have been telling Yanick all summer that I used to work with a player ranked lower than him in the Swiss rankings who made it all the way to No. 6 nationally. Why can’t you do the same?  I really think this will help Yanick believe in himself and realize what kind of player he is.  He is developing into a very tough player mentally along with his physical attributes"

In other matches, Brandon Farine fell to Koby Kramer-Golink in the final of the Flight C singles 7-5, 6-0.

"Brandon is such a hard worker, that I know he is not satisfied with this result," added Jeffrey. "Come spring, he will be a completely different player ."

In other action, Oscar Pachon fell to Jan Burmeister of Southern Miss, 6-4, 6-2.

"Oscar knows where he needs to develop and we look for him to develop as the Spring approaches," said Jeffrey.

"The great thing out of this tournament is that all our guys know they have a lot of work to do," said Jeffrey "This only makes us stronger as a team.  What I was impressed with is the way the guys really supported each other. All the guys are  happy for Yanick and were there to support and watch him win the final.  That is what team comradey is about. It is something that we have this year that we have never had before.  This will make a big difference as we push into the spring season".
