Men’s Tennis: Louisiana Places Four On All-Louisiana Men’s & Women’s Tennis Team

BATON ROUGE – Louisiana’s Jan Galka was one of four Ragin’ Cajuns to earn post-season honors as the Louisiana Sports Writers Association announced its annual All-Louisiana men’s and women’s tennis teams.
 
The teams were selected on a vote by tennis sports information members based on nominations submitted by the state schools. SIDs were not allowed to vote for members from their specific schools.
 
Galka was one of three freshmen named to the six-man, first-team with Pearse DolanJamie Fraser and Arthur Libaud each named to the second-team.
 
The native of Warsaw, Poland finished 10-9 overall in singles play and 15-7 in doubles while becoming the first Ragin’ Cajun to earn first-team All-Sun Belt Conference since Rick De Groot in 2014. Galka posted 8-8 record at No. 1 singles and 2-1 at No. 2 and had team-leading 15 victories in doubles play during the spring, playing primarily at No. 2 (12-7).
 
Dolan finished 9-9 overall in singles play during the spring and was 7-8 overall in doubles, teaming primarily with Libaud and earning second-team All-Sun Belt Conference honors.
 
The duo reached a national ranking of No. 53 during the early part of the season, with their highlight win coming against Northern Arizona’s doubles team of Tim Handel and Ruben Montano, then ranked No. 27 in the ITA National Rankings.
 
Fraser, a second-team All-Sun Belt Conference selection in singles, led Louisiana with a 21-8 overall record, including an 18-5 mark in dual matches. The junior was 9-4 at the No. 5 position and a combined 8-1 at No. 4 (5-1) and No. 6 (3-0).
 
The Sydney, Australia native became the first Ragin’ Cajun to win 20 matches in a season since Tomasz Krzyskowski (20-9) in 2009 while earning the clinching win over Nebraska’s Isaac Nortey to give Louisiana its first win over a Power Five program since 2012.
 
Libaud posted a 17-8 record in singles play and was 12-8 overall in doubles action, where he teamed with Dolan in earning second-team All-Sun Belt Conference honors. He played primarily at No. 4 singles, posting a 9-4 record, while also seeing time at No. 1 (1-0), No. 2 (0-1), No. 3 (5-3) and No. 5 (2-0) singles.
 
He teamed with Pearse Dolan at No. 1 doubles, earning a national ranking of No. 53 during the early part of the season.

Other major men’s award winners were Santiago Perez of Xavier who was the state’s top freshman, while Dane Esses, of Tulane was Newcomer of the Year.
 
Rhea Verma of Northwestern State was the women’s top freshman, while Paris Corley earned newcomer honors as her first year at LSU.
 
Mark Booras of Tulane on the men’s side was the state Coach of the Year after the Green Wave advanced to the first ITA National Team Indoor Championship berth in program history. Tulane also advanced to its fourth straight NCAA Tournament appearance.
 
LSU co-coaches Julia and Michael Sell and Kyle Russell of Loyola were named Women’s Co-Coaches of the Year. The Sells and LSU won 16 matches, finishing at No. 28 in the ITA Team rankings advancing to the NCAA Second Round.
 
Russell, the Southern States Athletic Conference Coach of the Year, led Loyola to a program record ranking of No. 12 in the NAIA and the school’s first appearance in the NAIA Championship.
