Men’s Tennis: Late Charge By Louisiana Falls Short Against UTA In SBC Championships Quarters

PEACHTREE CITY, Ga. – Louisiana Men’s Tennis (21-10, 3-4 SBC) did not go away quietly, putting up a fight all the way to the end but the valiant comeback came up short against UT Arlington (15-8, 4-2 SBC), with Louisiana losing 4-2 to end its season in the quarterfinals of the Sun Belt Conference Men’s Tennis Championships at the Peachtree City Tennis Center.

Junior Pearse Dolan and freshman Kacper Dworak did their part in the match, with Dolan sparking the comeback with a win at No. 2 singles and Dwoark keeping Louisiana alive with a win at No. 6.

HOW IT HAPPENED (Doubles): UT Arlington began the match by taking the doubles point, but the point was decided after all three matches were played with Louisiana setting the tone of not going down without a fight.  Dolan and senior Arthur Libaud, playing No. 1 doubles, lost to the UT Arlington pairing of Guanarteme Nuez and Mauricio Rio, 6-4, to give UTA its first win in doubles.

Louisiana bounced back with the junior pairing of Elio Lago and Jamie Fraser winning 6-3 at No. 3 over the UT Arlington duo of Miguel Cabrera and Alejandro Hayen.  But UT Arlington would lock up the doubles point at No. 2 when the Mavericks duo of Eduard Simo and Enrique won against the freshmen pairing of Dworak and Jan Galka, 6-4.

The win at No. 2 meant that UT Arlington took a 1-0 lead into singles.

HOW IT HAPPENED (Singles): UT Arlington began singles with a straight set win at No. 3 with Lago falling to Rio, 6-3, 6-4.  But Louisiana bounced right back with Dolan’s 7-5, 6-0 straight set win over Nuez at No. 2 singles, and the win by Dolan put the score at 2-1 with UT Arlington holding a slight edge.

At No. 4, Libaud almost mounted his own comeback, winning the second set in his match against Hayen, before coming up short in a, 6-3, 1-6, 6-1, three-set loss to put UT Arlington one win away from clinching the match.  At No. 6 Dwoark came storming back against Jakub Grzegorczyk to keep Louisiana alive with a three-set, 3-6, 6-3, 6-3 win to put the score at 3-2.

UT Arlington then clinched the match at No. 1 with a three-set battle between Galka and Pardo, which saw Galka battle to keep Louisiana in the match.  But Pardo came away with a 6-7(2), 6-4, 6-3 win to give UT Arlington the 4-2 win.
