Men’s Tennis: Johnson Tabbed SBC Male Tennis Athlete of the Week; Cajuns Move Up In ITA Poll
LAFAYETTE, La. – Sophomore Hunter Johnson was tabbed the Sun Belt Conference Tennis Co-Men’s Athlete of the Week after going 3-0 on the week in singles play and 1-0 in doubles play to guide the Ragin’ Cajuns men’s tennis team to a 2-1 record and third place finish at the HEB Tournament of Champions, the conference office announced on Wednesday.
“Hunter played well this past weekend, and I am glad that he earned this award,” head coach Mark Jeffrey said. “Playing in the HEB is never easy. The wind there makes you play with a different mindset. You have to be able to adjust and cut back on swings which Hunter did a great job of this past weekend.”
Johnson picked up a doubles and singles victory in a 4-0 sweep of DePaul before defeating conference foe Juan Troglia of South Alabama in straight sets, 6-2, 6-3. The Texas native then picked up his sixth straight victory in singles against SMU in a 4-3 decision. The 2-1 weekend saw the Cajuns (10-3) jump five spots in the ITA rankings to 62.
"We are pleased that the national tennis rankings has identified our program as one of the best nationally out of so many teams," Jeffrey stated. "We feel that our best tennis is ahead of us, and I look for our guys to make strides this week in fixing the little things we saw this past weekend."
The athlete of the week award was the second of the spring for the Cajuns with Carl Alberton picking up the honor on Feb. 19.
Louisiana returns to action on Tuesday, March 11 at 3 p.m. when the Cajuns host No. 55 George Washington at Cajun Courts. Admission to the match is free.
