Men’s Tennis: Gutsy Performance Lands Alberton SBC Tennis Athlete of the Week Award

NEW ORLEANS, La. – Senior Carl Alberton earned the Sun Belt Conference Tennis Male Athlete of the Week award on the heels of his gusty comeback win against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, the conference office announced on Wednesday.

“I’m very happy for Carl with his clinching match against Texas Corpus will go down as one of the most amazing matches in Cajun tennis history," head coach Mark Jeffrey commented. “This week will be a memorable one for Carl as he looks back on it one day. He should smile and enjoy what he did because it was truly amazing."

Alberton went undefeated last week with wins against Xavier (La.) and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. His singles victory against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi tested the meddle of the senior from Adelaide, South Australia.

While playing with an injury, Alberton battled his way back from a 4-1 deficit in the third set to win and clinch the 4-2 team victory for the Ragin’ Cajuns men’s tennis squad against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. Playing at the No.5 position, Alberton won the first set 7-5 against the Islanders Matt Westmoreland. Serving to win the match in the second set up 5-4, Alberton suddenly fell victim to severe legs cramps and ended up letting the set slip away from him, 7-5. Alberton then fell behind early in the third set, 4-1, but didn’t give up and won the last five games to clinch the match for the Cajuns.

Alberton also registered a strong 6-1, 6-3 victory against Adam Albrecht of Xavier at the No.4 position. With the wins, Alberton improved to 3-0 on the season.

The Cajuns (7-2) return to action on Sunday 11 a.m. as the team heads to Houston, Texas to face Rice. For more info on Ragin’ Cajuns men’s tennis follow the team on twitter @CajunMensTennis.
