Men’s Tennis: DeGroot Tabbed Sun Belt Men’s Tennis Player of the Week

Louisiana’s Rick DeGroot picked up the Ragin’ Cajuns first honor of the 2012 spring season as he was named the Sun Belt Conference Men’s Tennis Player of the Week after leading UL to a ranked win over the weekend, the conference office announced on Wednesday.

“Obviously Rick is well deserving of the award,” head coach Mark Jeffrey said. “His play has definitely improved from the beginning of the year to this point. He has stepped in at the No.1 position for us and done very well. To this point he has already defeated a ranked opponent, and he has been invaluable to the team’s success.”

DeGroot led the Cajuns (4-3) to a 2-1 week including a 4-0 win over No. 75 Texas A&M Corpus Christi. The Pekala, Holland native anchored both the doubles and singles lineup. The freshman has won four of his last five singles matches, while he and Carlin Murray have won back-to-back doubles matches.

The Cajuns open a nine-match homestand on Wednesday, Feb. 29 against No. 7 Kentucky at Cajun Courts.
